We're hoping to move out to Oz in 3 to 5 years time. At the moment I'm in a skilled occupation & have enough points to apply for a skilled sponsored visa (category 176 with sponsorship from my Brother who's a permanent resident).
I'm actually due to be made redundant in 3 months time & plan to set up my own business. What I really want to do is move to Oz in say 3 years & set up the same business there. The conditions for the business visa are really demanding & would be tough to meet, so it seems easier to apply now for the 176 visa which will then be valid for 5 years.
Does anybody know if I can apply for a 176 visa & then buy or set up a visa when I get to Oz rather than taking a paid job?
Once you have been granted PR via any type of visa you are in the same position as any Oz citizen apart from the fact that you cannot vote or do jury duty.
So the short answer is yes you can set up a business once you get here and a lot of people do as it is one of the best ways to maximise tax breaks available in Oz. Having said that you don't mention what type of work you do and this could be important as many trades over here require you to be licensed before you can set up business. Some of the license requirements are onerous.
