I'm a Brit and this is a bit presumptious as I'm not even coming to Australia until June 2010, but theoretically how would someone on a 457 visa become a permanent resident and then citizen and how long would it take? I'm 40 and being sponsored by a Australian company and will be bringing my wife (39) and three kids (all under 10).
Your employer might be able to facilitate permanent residency for you now, under the Employer Nomination Scheme (or Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, if the employer is in a "regional area" of Australia).

We've now been in Perth for 4 months and despite a rocky start are glad to be here. The guys at the Joondalup Migrant Centre (Lakeside Shopping Centre, Joondalup) helped us out with everything from banking to getting medicare cover and a drivers licence. I can't recommend them enough. They can be contacted on 08 9233 9100 / http://www.facebook.com/joondalupmigrantcentre
My case is a bit different as my employer is not willing to sponsor and i read some blogs that there is no possibility to lodge a PR whilst staying in oz on 457 . What would be the best option? Will my employer have any clue at any stage of my processing in case if i would do it on my own?in fact my q would be is there any chance to get a PR?This message has been edited. You can apply for a general skilled visa (subclass 175/176/475) while in Australia on a 457 - but it will not provide a bridging visa entitlement (should your existing 457 visa expire).
Best regards.
