I've just found this website and can't believe how helpful and informative it is.

Our circumstances are a little frustrating.
I am a qualified hairdresser but because of having children have not being working in this profession (hairdressing hours don't always fit in with childcare) so I have been working in a call centre to earn and get some normality. To get the skills visa it states that I must have worked 12 months out of the last 2yrs in the profession.

My husband on the other hand is currently a quantity surveyor but because he doesn't hold the 'degree' AIQS have failed his skills assessment. He has been working in this profession for over 12yrs and is highly experienced and it has never held him back in the UK and I am sure it wouldn't over in OZ.

Both our occupations are on the skills list and are in demand in all states.

Can anyone offer any advice on how we can get our dream underway Smile

You don't mention your ages, but assuming that time is on your side, I recommend either you go to work in a salon, or your husband get the required degree.

The requirements for a skilled visa are very clear and are non-negotiable.

Perhaps there is another visa that you could qualify for... a sponsored visa for your husband if he can find a company to sponsor him.

I'm sure one of the RMAs will chime in with recommendations.

Best of luck,
Marilyn

hi thanks for that.
i'm in my early 30s and hubby in mid 30s.
My husband has now decided to go and get the necessary qualifications (which fingers crossed should take 6 months to a yr), I won't be working so not really worth me working in a salon for 12 months.

Just a question if anyone can help- would it be worth going through TRA for my hairdressing to gain the extra points- shouldnt need them but would it look better on the application? Smile

If you intend to seek work as a hairdresser, it will go a long way if you can prove you have the qualifications.

I'm not sure how it works with TRA (or England) but I have heard fellow Americans who came here on their spouse visa complain about how difficult it is to get skills recognition once they were here. It seems that it is much easier when you are in your home country. Yes, it's a pain to put together all of the documentation and pay all the fees, etc but it is well worth it when you land here and have a piece of paper that says you are equivalent to X Australian qualifications.

It is a personal preference of course, but if you intend to work in a regulated industry, such as hair dressing, then I think you will find life much easier here if you get a head start on the game and get your qualifications certified before your arrival.

Best of luck,
Marilyn
