Section 7 of the application - the experience in occupation - What format have others used for this. Are they after a list? What sort of detail is required. I am an electrical fitter by trade so a reply from any tradesman would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance Barry

Hello Barry

I am in the same boat as you here(General Electrician), I have pretty much finished my personal statement. I have gone in quite descriptive with specific jobs. I have done a section on each of my employers from leaving school (1989) giving examples of the type of day to day work involved and steps on how to do the job from start to finish. With regards to tools used I have listed the tools used from screwdrivers to taps/dies etc. I have listed what test equipment I use and given a general description of how I would use it and on the type of jobs. My statement is around 4000 words but still am asking myself the question is it still in depth enough as you could write a book on 16 yrs exp.

All I can say is make a start on it and iron out/modify it out as you go along, provide you get references to back up what you are saying in your references then I think this is what they are looking for.

I hope this helps.

Cheers - That would be famtastic - The problem I am having is what format to present the information - With almost 20 years experience obviously there is a lot of data.

Many thanks.

I have gained a successful TRA via Go matilda ( Glen Newton) the guidance I received was very good and obviously achieved my aim. It is the quality, accuracy, traceability and relevance of the information rather than the quantity. Official documents are most important and the format is essential. I would recommend using an agent it will cost money but it will save time and disapointment.

Hi i have just posted on another thread asking for advice on filling out an application for the TRA as an electrician. I unfortunately do not have all the work experience that you have, ( I have only ever worked on Street lighting) but if you would be willing,I would love to have a look at a copy of your approved application, It would be geat just to have something to use as a general guide.

If you are willing, please could you send it to:-

stephen.booth17@ntlworld.com

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Steve

My names Mick i'm also an Electrician, I passed the TRA stage about 4 weeks ago and are about to send off my main application to DIMIA. You say in your post that you have only worked on street lighting since your apprenticeship.I'm not 100% sure but that might not be enough experiance for the TRA to grade you as "General Electrician" but there are several other classes. May I surgest you ring one of the many agenties to seek advice. Are you self employed or on the books at the moment?

Good luck

Mick

Hi Mickroo,

I was thinking of applying as a specialist electrician. I have actually been employed as an elecrical inspector for the last 3 years with Salford City council, but this too is on street lighting. And in fact i am now working as an IT technician. But as an electrician for 6 of the last 12 months. My only other option is to wait a while and reaply as an IT technician, but i wanna get there asap before my girls get too tied down here.
Thanks for your quick reply Mick.
