British phones have a different wall fitting from the Oz phones but the British phone will work if you use a wall adapter. It should be noted that unless your phone is approved for use in Oz then it is illegal to fit them onto the phone network. This is true for modems, routers etc. as well.
If you are going to use an adapter get it in the UK as that type of thing is hard to come by in Oz. It is the same fitting for American phones.

Yes, in they same way that it is illegal to attach a non-uk phone to a uk phone system, either though they are made in the same factory and you can buy adapters in the UK, and most people will do it.
Australia pretty strict on rules, and of course union involvement. i.e. You are not permitted to change a plug in QLD, but everyone does.
Oz plugs don't have fuses, so is the circuit that trips rather than the plug, and house circuits are 10amp rather than 13amps, so some UK fast boil kettles etc can trip them out.
