My family and I are looking to move out next Jan to Melbourne. My wife is a midwife and is will have the visa side sorted out with her job.

I am an IT Contractor running my own limited company in the UK. There appear to be a fair few jobs at reasonable rates in my field in Melbourne but I have no idea how the setup works over there.

Are there any contractors here or does anyone have any pointers to where I might get some info on the subject? Specifically I want to find out how you operate as an independent contractor and what taxes are payable.

When I first moved here I was a contractor in the engineering field.

The company I used was called Pendragon Management who are a contractor management firm. Their website is www.pendragon.net.au

They were very efficient and looked after everything for me including my tax return every year. They did of course charge a fee which was deducted every week from my payments. They also do recruitment, sort out visas etc.
