Hi, I am a panel beater with over 20 years experience, I completed my informal apprenticeship years ago. Some time ago when I enquired with TRA they said I also needed a formal qualification (because pathway d had been removed). I then completed an NVQ 3 at my local college. Because of my skills and experience I completed the 3 year course in 3 months with merits and distinctions. TRA have now said that I do not qualify as my NVQ 3 should have been completed within 2 years of my apprenticeship and should have been for 900 hours of study. My query now, is that because tra have not yet implemented the MAP on the 1st of September. Should I go on an employee sponsored 457 visa? I am 45 in November so time is running out for me. If I manage to get the visa, I understand that after working for 2 years I can apply for PR, will my age go against me. I also have a wife and two young children, will the kids get free schooling or do we have to pay?

Working for 2 years for the same sponsor does make you eligible for a PR visa under the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) - however the employer has to want to sponsor you under this scheme and has to be willing to pay the fees relating to this (and also has to convince DIAC that they need to employ an overseas person to meet their requirements). It is not just an automatic progression to PR. Your age may well go against you as you would be 47 by then - even under ENS there is still a 45 maximum (however this can be waived if it could be proved that you had skills that were scarce in Australia).
...I also have a wife and two young children, will the kids get free schooling or do we have to pay?.....Schooling will depend on what state you move to - currently it is NOT free in NSW although I believe that in other states it would be free.

Hello bagpuss.
My view (for what it is worth) is that the reasons given by TRA for failing your assessment are questionable. A dogmatic insistence on 900 hours of study is denying Australia access to skilled persons such as you who have obtained formal recognition of your trade skills competencies.
I would be lodging an appeal - and I personally am happy to take this matter to senior persons within TRA if needs be.
In saying this I recognise you are 45 in the near future, so I cannot guarantee to have the outcome you want within the required timeline if you are planning to lodge a general skilled visa application.
I am in the UK presently (I return to Melbourne on Saturday) - feel able to send a PM or an email to me with your telephone number, or to telephone my colleague Stephen Dickson on Melbourne number 00 61 3 9935 2929 if you would like some professional assistance. A call after 11pm UK time (9am in Melbourne) should find Stephen at his desk - or send him an email (stephen.dickson@gomatilda.com).
Best regards.

I have a link into a recruiter in Melbourne that is looking for panel beaters and spray painters. In turn, this might lead to an employer sponsored visa.
Please send me a PM or an email (alan - at - gomatilda - dot - com) if you are interested. An email with a CV attached would be best.
Best regards.

thanks for your reply re skills level transition , now i know im not the sharpest tool in the box but i read the link you gave me top to toe at least ten times and cannot find anything relating to skills level transition , sorry to be a pain but once i understand what this is i will feel more comfortable about engaging an agent to deal with my application
I recommend you have a chat with one of my colleagues - telephone Southampton number 023 80 30 2525, and ask for Lorraine Beaumont.
Best regards.

I am wondering does anyone recently tried to get his skills assessed as Vehicle Painter? I've read dosen times these criteria under which skills are assessed, but in the end I got confused anyway. Maybe MR.Collet could shed some light on the matter. I am 35 years old, from EU. Last year I attended our local college and was awarded with certificate of Qualification of Vehicle Painter(1000 hours) This was done especially for migration purposes, as I have been officialy working in this ocupation about 3,5 years and main eduction was "on the job training". My actual experience is over 16+ years,I completed my informal apprenticeship more tha a decade ago, but unfortunately I can't provide any evidence about this period because I was self-emlpoyed and there are no any documents left. So I must deal only with last 3,5 years.
Also in 2004-2006 timeframe I attended a series of short courses (3-10 days lenght) at local private training centre and I hold 13 certificates in automotive painting and refinishing-does TRA accept them as evidence?
And one more question: does anyone know what are the requirements for IELTS if applying for QLD State Sponsorhip as Vehicle Painter? Curently I hold av.6.
Please share your experience about TRA assessment and maybe SS as Spray Painter, I browsed many forums, but it seems there are not so many people applying as Vehicle Painters. Any thoughts are welcome.
