Melbourne's population is on track to reach 4 million in December. Brisbane tops 2 million this month. Australia will reach 22 million people in November, and it is adding a million every 2½ years.

Since 2005, Australia's population growth has taken off. The Bureau of Statistics estimates net migration last year soared to a record 253,415, up from 106,425 in 2004. That lifted population growth to a record 406,083, up from 240,250.

Now, Treasury has upped its forecast of Australia's future population, predicting it will have more than 35 million within 40 years - just two years after it forecast 28 million in that time. Should we be excited? Worried? Or sceptical? Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is excited. ''I think it's great that our population is growing, because so many countries around the world are shrinking, and that poses a real problem in terms of having a strong tax base for the future and a strong economy,'' he told Fairfax radio yesterday.

Did you notice what Kevin's reasoning was for approving of the overpopulation of Australia?

TAX BASE

he's worried about TAXES!!! Not about how we're going to find enough WATER for 50 MILLION people!!

I live in an area that was once PRIME farmland, but because now more than 90% of OUR water is sent to MELBOURNE the farmers here are selling off what is left of their heards, subdividing the land and selling it to developers for yet MORE HOUSES!!!

We're already being asked to limit our showers to 4 minutes. Have you ever tried to take a complete shower in 4 minutes or less? Try it sometime. Set the timer the second you turn on the water and turn off the timer the second you stop the water. In some homes here, you can't even GET hot water in four minutes, never mind take a complete shower.

I for one am WORRIED, VERY WORRIED

I know that is hypocritical of me as I am one of those 200,000 immigrants each year that was allowed to settle permanently in Australis, but that doesn't mean I can't be worried about my future, the future of my fellow residents, and the future of my new country.

Cheers,
Marilyn
