Foerign truck drivers and farmhands could be brought toAustralia as part of an overhaul of the guest-worker program designed to address chronic skills shortages.
The Immigration Department is reviewing the system of classifying occupations covered by the skilled migration program and is under pressure from employer groups to open the program to semi-skilled workers.

We are hoping to get out soon on a pr visa, whilst i am skilled my husband is not but he does have a hgv class 1 license. After much searching it appears that this is useless in australia, and that anybody wishing to drive trucks would have to re-take a test at there own expense If this takes off I wonder if they will just transfer hgv license as they do now with cars
Hi, me and my wife have been looking into every possability of emigrating to Australia but so far have not been able to find a visa that we would be eligble for. We looked into New Zealand because we could go there on a work visa as they are allowing HGV drivers in on a 2 year renewable visas but we know we would prefer Australia. It is great to hear that things may be changing in Oz regarding HGV drivers but how do you rate the possability of it being put on the skilled visa list and is there anything we could do in the meantime and are there any government or immigration web sites that would be able to give us information on any further developments?
