When Joan Katula reported for work at the Memorial Hospital in Adelaide, her main worry was that they might not have a uniform that fitted her. It was just the fourth day of her new life in Australia.
By that evening, the Tanzanian-born nurse, who had trained in Britain and worked in the US, was stunned to learn that the company she had flown halfway around the world to join had revoked its job offer because she was pregnant.
As it was supposedly explained to Ms Katula, 28, there was no way she could stay in Australia, either. Still jet-lagged, she was allegedly told to leave the country on the first available flight with her husband, a doctor.
