Australia's fertility rate hit a 10-year high in 2004-05, according to preliminary data issued Friday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

It said 257,900 births were registered in the year ended June 30, 2005, with the fertility rate at 1.797 babies per woman.

Australia's population climbed 1.2%, or 237,100 people, in 2004-05 to stand at 20.33 million.
