Australia could face a shortage of 2287 anaesthetists by the year 2028, up from an estimated deficit of just four this year, according to new estimates.
An analysis of workforce trends by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and Access Economics has found the shortfall will be driven by an ageing population, rising incomes and greater patient demand for elective surgery.
