Hundreds of Immigration Department staff fear they will lose their jobs as the agency prepares for what is shaping to be a horror May budget.

Immigration head Andrew Metcalfe warned all staff yesterday he had set up two taskforces to examine how to slash at least $24 million but almost certainly more from his budget, saying the global economic crisis was "directly impacting on us as a department".
