Immigration is bolstering Melbourne's home building boom, but some of the state's regional areas are going backwards.

And a revaluation of Victoria's 2.5 million properties shows the total market value has surpassed $1 trillion for the first time.

Building approvals in Melbourne grew by almost 15 per cent to more than 15,000 in the six months to June, according to a report by the Housing Industry Association.
