Tracey Hughes had planned to become a lawyer when she had a sudden change of heart.

"One day I woke up and went, 'I don't want to spend the next 10 years studying, I'd rather do something more creative'," Ms Hughes says. "And I just decided then and there to do hairdressing."

Having started hairdressing in Britain in 1986, Ms Hughes opened her Melbourne salon in 1997 and employs 12 hairdressers.
