The Federal Government will boost Australia's skilled migrant intake 30 per cent to record levels in a bid to overcome a shortage of skilled workers.

As part of tonight's Federal Budget - the first by Kevin Rudd's Labor Government - Immigration Minister Chris Evans announced an extra 31,000 skilled migrants will be allowed into Australia permanently in 2008-2009.

Mr Evans says the extra allocation will take skilled migrant numbers to 133,500 for the year, by far the largest component of the country's total migrant intake of 190,300.

hi Alan,
Does this mean that the proposals for the new Pathway will be completed soon?
Do you have a date when they will come into practise and the requirements for unskilled workers.
My husband is a skilled and experienced Wall and Floor Tiler, with many years experience in domestic and contract work, he only has a NVQ II because I pushed him to do it becasuse we were thinking of emigrating.
I'm a police officer but waiting to resign, once we have visas and dont want to be an officer over in Australia.
Any assistance would be greatly appriecated
thanks

No, I would not be drawing that conclusion.

Best regards.
