Incoming immigration minister Kevin Andrews faces early pressure over the Government's controversial 457 visas amid criticism of his predecessor, Amanda Vanstone, over the issue.
As immigration-sector groups complained yesterday that Senator Vanstone was not across the detail of the visas - which allow foreign workers to enter Australia on a temporary basis - the trucking industry called for early action to allow it access to the scheme.
Under the 457 scheme, more than 390,000 temporary skilled migrants have been brought to Australia over the past decade to fill skills gaps.
While the scheme relieved labour shortages in boom states such as Western Australia, it has been criticised as vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous business people.
