The number of skilled migrant visas given to people with accounting qualifications more than doubled last year to 14,680, according to the official 2010-2011 migration program report.

Monash University researcher Bob Birrell said the main source appeared to be former international students who had applied under the old, more relaxed rules for skilled migration. It was part of the government's effort to work through a "stockpile" of former students seeking permanent residency.

He questioned whether accounting should still be included as an occupation in demand on the Skilled Occupation List for skilled migration.

"It certainly should be examined because this is new data - it confirms there is a very large number of accountants to be digested in the labour market at a time when it's going soft," he said.

In my opinion this is NOT true.

The Australian article

"JULIA Gillard's carbon tax will provide a bonanza for big banks, accountants, lawyers and other professionals"

Accountants are positioned to see record demands in the industry and on our skills. There are new programs in carbon accounting

I believe that as a direct result of the carbon tax, Australia will use every one of the 14,680 accountants and STILL be short staffed in this industry.

Just my opinion.
