Federal Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says Australians will not be cheated out of apprenticeships by the creation of a new trade skills training visa.
The visa category allows employers in regional areas to bring in unskilled workers from overseas to become apprentices.
Labor wants it scrapped, saying there is no requirement for employers to advertise the positions first.
