Immigration Minister Chris Evans will make a formal submission to cabinet to cut the number of skilled migrant visas on the back of the global financial crisis.
Senator Evans will make the submission in the context of cabinet's budget negotiations, but he refused to be drawn on how much the skilled migrant intake would be reduced.
It is believed he will propose a modest cut to the scheme but will wait on economic numbers and consultation from industry before making final recommendations.
