Australia faces a sharp rise in the number of migrants settling permanently following an explosion in the number of temporary visas issued.

Immigration Department figures show a spike in the number of long-stay visas issued to skilled workers and their families, indicating the number issued this year will outstrip previous years by tens of thousands.
