The Federal Government's decision to slash skilled migrant numbers by 14 per cent has divided industry groups, unions and academics but it was welcomed by the Opposition.
Immigration Minister Chris Evans announced Australia would now accept 115,000 permanent skilled migrants in 2008-09, 18,500 fewer than originally planned.
