When Corowa’s Focus Engineering last year won a lucrative contract to build one road bridge and three pedestrian bridges for the new Melbourne East Link Freeway, it found itself with a workforce not large enough to deliver the project.
Construction manager Rod Campbell said qualified welders were almost impossible to find and last year the company contacted Murray Regional Development Board to see if it could assist.
Focus Engineering was directed to the Department of Immigration’s skill matching database, as well as the CVs that Murray Regional Development Board had on its own database.
