(Editorial by Andrew Robb, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs)
The new citizenship test is a key part of the Government's ongoing commitment to help new migrants successfully integrate into Australia.
It's not a test of loyalty, you can't test what's in someone's heart.
The test is an incentive to give migrants the best possible chance to make the most of the opportunities Australia has to offer.
A working knowledge of the English language and a job are the key drivers that enable new migrants to make the most of their new life. The test is designed to ensure those who make the pledge to Australia, when taking out citizenship, fully understand the way of life they are committing to.
Nothing unites a country more than common language and values. It is common sense. Citizenship is a privilege, not a right.
