Effective integration of migrants into society was necessary to promote social and economic objectives, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said yesterday.
He warned that government must balance the economic benefits of a robust migration program against the views of the community.
"It is important for the community to believe that they are not being exploited," Mr Andrews told the Committee for Economic Development of Australia. "Immigration is not an end in itself; it must serve the national interest, both economic and social, and it must focus on the successful integration and participation of migrants into the Australian way of life."
