hi everyone just wondering if someone can help out with some advice. If I receive research work from a UK university while I am living and working in Oz do I pay tax in the UK and Oz? I guess I would be classed as working for myself so would I need an ABN number from the Oz taxation dept? then pay tax and GST on earning made from my research work for the university that I am signed to in the UK ? hope I have explained myself clearly enough for someone to understand!! Smile

Will you be paid by the UK university in the UK and in pounds ??

If you will be then this will be considered as overseas income and would be declared as such on your Oz tax retun - you would not need an ABN number as you are not operating in Oz as a business.

You will of course have to declare the income in the UK but you will still get your UK personal allowance.

Hi Colin
I will be doing this work as an Independant Researcher, I will be charging the University in pounds and they will pay my fee into my Australian Bank Account, I will be flying to Oz next week on an Prospective Marriage Visa and getting married in September,my plan is to get work in Australia and do my Independant Research work as a second job, I have already been told by the university that they have some research work they would like me to do so I was not too sure how it all works once they pay my fee into my Oz bank account.
Cheers
Steve
