It is really simple to apply for a TFN online once you have entered Australia, I don't think help is required by a third party that will probably also want to offer other financial services.

The website is: http://www.ato.gov.au

If it is that easy why do so many people raise this subject as an issue on forums and privately with me?

Best regards.

Hi,

I was in Australia last Oct 31-Nov 7 for my initial entry and vacation as well. I am planning to move there permanently maybe September next year.

My question is, can I apply online for TFN even if I am outside Australia? I tried the online application once and was asked for residential address, I gave the address where I am staying temporarily. But there's a system error after submitting so I am not sure if it was successful but I think it's not.

I want to try it again and will give my friend's address as my residential address. But I am not sure if this is okay. Do I need to be there, in the mentioned residential address, when they send the TFN? Please advise.

Also, I'm seeking jobs online. Do agents require TFN?

Thanks,
Beng

Why do you want to register for a TFN if you aren't yet a tax resident of Australia? Do you have Australian source income or capital gains that are assessable in Australia?

Best regards.

The ATO cross-check your visa number with DMIA, if you are not in the country you won't get a TFN.

Applying is a very easy process - generally you will only need one when you start work - and then you will get 28 days grace before an employer has to tax at the top marginal rate.

If you use an outside party for assistance ensure they are a registered tax agent. A list of agents can be found here

I was granted a permanent residency visa last month.

Thanks mark. I think you're right I can apply for TFN when I start working in Australia. I was misinformed that I need this to speed up my application online.
