Can someone advise - should we apply for a Tax File No. now before we leave for Oz, or wait until we get there in the Autumn?

Main reason for asking is that we have bank a/c over there and are being taxed 45% on our money at present? So any advice would be welcome as to whether we can claim back or reduce this. (We have PR visas and a perm QLD address already). Thanks guys!

If your address is not in Oz then the bank is way out of line. Overseas residents should only be taxed at 10% which is a withholding tax which you cannot claim back but can offset against your UK tax. You cannot get your TFN until you are resident in Oz and you should go get it straight away or else your bank would be entitled to to take 45% tax off you.

I would have a few cross words with your bank and ask for the tax back plus an adjustment for lost interest and inconvenience.
