Alan, Hoping you can answer this one. Having got my TFN through, after entering Oz on a Pros Spouse Visa from the UK, I now find I am classed as a "non-resident" for tax purposes. Is this correct? And if so, does my status change when I get the Spouse temporary residence visa after we are married in January?
Following on from that, do I get taxed at one rate before marriage, and then another afterwards?
I've already told the UK Inland Revenue that I have emigrated to Oz, just to confuse things further!!
Thanks,
Pollyana

That doesn't sound right to me Pollyana - as the holder of this visa I would say you are tax resident in Australia ... did you claim non-residency on the application for a TFN?

I suggest you telephone the ATO and/or appoint a tax agent who can handle this for you.

Best regards.

Thanks Alan, I had my doubts that it was correct. I applied for it over the internet, it accepted the passport number (which it wouldn't do until I had validated the visa) and I don't remember being asked about residency. If I had, then I would certainly have said I was resident here permanently.
Thanks for the advice - I'll get in touch with the ATO next week.

Just to let you know Alan, I wrote to the tax office, with all the visa papers etc, and they have now agreed to change it to a Resident Tax Status.
Much better!
Thanks for your advice
