Hi Paul,
Yes, you can buy a proparty while on a tempory Visa (pending approval from the FIRB).
HOWEVER, you will NOT be entitled to a FHOG from the Government, which I believe is currently worth $7000 + $3000, if you buy a property between 1 Jan 06 & 30 June 07.
What with the massive rate of Stamp Duty you have to pay compared to the UK (especially in Victoria), the FHOG comes in VERY HANDY!!!
For the record, I currently live in the UK but am in the process of emigrating (should be in Oz middle of September) and have spent the last few weeks researching this subject as I too will be emigrating on a temp Visa.
Hope this helps......

If you gain a Skilled Independant Visa can you get the FHOG from Australia still... was planning to buy a property almost straight away upon arrival! Or does this only apply to Temporary Visa holders? Thanks in advance to any replies.

Yep, the Federal Government's FHOG is still available: http://www.firsthome.gov.au/State Governments are also making available FHOG's - check with the relevant State once you have arrived, or via the drop down link on the above website. The solicitor who you engage to handle the purchase should also be able to assist with the application/s for the Grant. What if you get a mortgage in both names, but one is on a temp visa and the other is an Oz citizen - can you get the FHOG then???
