Article from Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper about negative gearing - this is the claiming of losses from investment activity (usually the rental of property) to reduce assessable income and hence one's tax bill. Note that this concept does not exist in the UK.

The use of negative gearing to reduce taxes has rocketed, with part-time working mothers and young singles battling to make ends meet taking up the tax break.
