Hi, I've just moved to Sydney as a permanent resident. Used Go Matilda during my application process - so thanks for all the advice and tips received......Working in I.T. I've been offered a really nice contracting role - but they want me to work on an ABN ??? I have a TFN but am wondering - am I in a better tax position with a TFN or an ABN. They are desperate for the role to be filled and said they would also accept me with a TFN - if they REALLY have to .... I'm not a tax expert so I don't know what option is the better one ?
An ABN would indicate self employment ... the key issue here is whether or not they are offering you self employment in the form of a consultancy, or an employed position.
If I am right there are issues other than tax to consider, though I acknowledge that tax will also be an important element in the decision.
Best regards.

Hi Alan, The role is being offered as a six month contract - its a government agency. As you can see its like looking into a hole for me - but I don't want the ATO after me.
