Hi, we opened a bank account through HSBC here in the UK (there was a charge of £100)this was done fairly quickly and we have just received all our cards/cheque books etc ready to use when we arrive. We leave for Oz on 25th November.

Hi There is westpac bank you can open on line before you go. My friends done that before they left in May. Weve opened an account with commonwealth because there is one in the city we are moving to. ozzie banks dont charge for the pleasure of opening an account unlike the UK banks!! But ozzie accounts do charge you for the account monthly even if in credit $5 with commonwealth nothing bank breaking but must have money in there to cover it. Teryna

We opened an account with HSBC, purely because we banked with them in the UK. There wasn't any charge and no charge for transferring funds. Bear in mind that in WA they only have one branch in the city, so not very convenient when you get here. We opened accounts with the Commonwealth, they have branches everywhere as do most of the main banks. We had a little bit of bother transferring money later on though and if i could do it again would have a look at Ozforex or something similar.
