Hi My husband is also a tradesman, joiner in fact. Are you using Go Matilda? WWe have visited Australia but do not know which agent to use? Can you recommend yours?

To be self employed or to work as a sub contractor, you should have an ABN which takes about 1 minute.

Check your qualifications against the Licence requirements. To be a self employed Electrician in Australia is not a simple process, believe me, Im an Electrician holding a qualified supervisors licence, and that does not entitle me to be self employed. Use the Dept. Of Fair Trading website to research, it will also depend on which State you intend working in. Good Luck.
