Hi again

We are also wondering about getting a taxcode before arriving in Australia.

We noticed a number of sites offering a service where we can apply for tax help in getting a tax code so we do not pay 48% tax but the regular 29% tax from the second we start working. Is this correct?
If so, can we get a tax code ourselves without having to shell out more money for a package from some company to get this?

Also, we heard you can claim tax back... Can you let us know anything about this please?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't bother paying anyone to do this. After we arrived here, I went to the local tax office (in a shopping centre!!), asked for advice, and was directed to their website. I filled in some details, and a week or two later, we got our TFNs - tax file numbers. If timing is an issue, maybe you have a day or two on arrival doing all the chores (getting phone, opening PO Box for mail, getting TFN, etc) and then take a week or two off, and then start work with all the details in hand?!
