Can anyone offer advice regarding what to do about managing finances. I am now in possession of a visa, the house is on the market and an offer has been accepted, have had a broker round to quote for shipping, but feel overwhelmed by the whole financial thing and keep burying my head in the sand and telling myself I will sort it "tomorrow" which never comes! Should I seek independent finacial advice or just go straight to the Commonwealth Bank. Any advice, tips gratefully received.
By the way, what a great idea these forums are!

Hello

It depends on what you've got to move, in terms of Pensions Isa's etc, I'd get an independent advisor for these things.

I think Allan Collett is able to give financial advice through a sister company. Failing that there's a chap who works for Montfort International (based in Surrey) who seems quite knowledgeable, might be worth giving them a call.

Hi don't rush in. If you used an agent ask his/her advice they will be able to point you in the right direction/contacts etc. As for the Commonwealth Bank, I have read lots of postings about on this forum about how much the charge for every transaction. So this may not be the best thing to do.

If you subscribe to Australian News (Outbound publishing, www.outboundpublishing.com)it will give you the information you are looking for.

hope this helps

Happy emmigration

Just for anyone's information....

If you have a Nationwide Building Society Flexaccount (standard current a/c), they do not charge ANY money for using your card overseas, whether you are paying as EFTPOS or using the cash machine. This is what we have done and any money we get in the UK we can get straight out in oz with no bank charges.

Thanks so much for mentioning that Jon! I've had a Flexaccount for a couple of years and I never knew that. That'll teach me not to read the small print.

Hi,

I got fedup being given the big pitch by the finance consultants so I researched a Pommie Migrants Guide.

I don't think you can attach word docs to this forum, send me an email to francis.mcdowell@marconi.com & I'll forward it to you.If anyone knows how to attach, I'd be happy to make it available to all.

This is draft v1, so bear with me.

Francis
