Can anyone tell me how easy it is to get a mortgage and a credit card when you only have a 4 year temporary visa?

My family and I are moving in late August to Perth from the UK. I have an current account with HSBC and was thinking of setting up an Oz account with HSBC in Oz.

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

We were over in Oz last year on a 457 (4 yr temp visa) we got bank cards OK & credit cards after around 6 months. We banked with Westpac and our credit card via Ezybank (woolworths) We only rented therefore had no mortgage so can't comment on this. Unfortunately your UK credit history has no bearing over in OZ so its a case of starting again & building up your credit rating.

Hi Simon

We are here on a 457 temp visa.. have been here 1 year (time wizzes by !!)

We set up our Oz bank account through HSBC before we left the UK and our Oz bank cards etc were ready and waiting for us when we arrived here.

We applied and got a credit card with them after about 7 months of being here. We had to place 5000 dollars in a deposit/interest account as secruity against the card.

We are just in the process of applying for a mortgage.

Where will you be staying in Perth and whats your job ?

Best wishes - Harries

i have been here about 5 months. mortage is no problem, you cannot ru away with your asset. as long as you have 10% to put down it is OK.

the credit card comes withthe mortgage. otherwise we would have to wait for another month or so!

the property you buy has to go through the FIRB, Foreighn Investment Review Board, basically the make sure there are mot a load of outsiders pushinghte prices up for aussies. if you buy a new home or a piece of land thewn it is no problem. have a look on the web for the rules.

Thanks for all your contributions guys.

I'm hoping to start work on the 13th Sept this year. I'm a structural engineer and have managed to get sponsored by an employer. I visited Perth in January and had three interviews. Eventually one of them came through with an offer of employment.

I've got lots of things to do before leaving plus I'm getting married and have a honeymoon in Prague to fit in.

STRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

wow - you have got a lot to do... Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding.

You will love Prague - soak up the history and enjoy the old and beautuful buildings while you can, nothing like that down here.

Of course as you saw earlier in the year, Perth is the most clean and stunning City in the world.. we never get tired of looking at the views from Kings Park.

All the best.
