I'm in the US and have been offered a job in Newcastle at roughly $72k AUSD. I've never been to Newcastle (or Australia for that matter) so I'm pretty ignorant about the area. Is this a decent salary? If I convert it to USD it doesn't look so great (compared to what I make now). However based on the cost of living calculator on this site it seems like it's equivalent to $95k USD which I would definitely be pleased with. I have a wife and a 2 year old daughter. Can we have a reasonable quality of life on my salary alone? It's likely my wife will find a job (we think/hope) but don't want to move there expecting that to happen...

Hello Mike,

Where are you moving from in the States? I do think thios makes a difference. I live in San Francisco and go to my mums in Newcastle 5 times a year. With regard to living on$72k you can do it but it's not a lot of money. Cars and dining out are expensive as well as housing depending on where you locate to. I'd prefer a salary quite a bit higher if I were you. I don't think the cost of living converter is that acurate BUT who am I to say. I'd prefer to get 95k US than $72K aussie and see myself living better on it.
