Advice on buying real estate

We have recently moved to Perth and are renting until we can decide where to buy. We would like to put our money into real estate and would like advice on how to use our money the best way. We have $300000 to play with, but are unsure how to use this the best way. Obviously we would like to buy properties as an investment. How much would we be able to mortgage and is it better to use most of the money as a deposit or would it be better to have a mortgage to enable us to but more than one property.
Not sure where to start as obviously tax issues arise aswell. My husband is a builder and is currently employed earning $1100 per week.
Any advice would be greatly appretiated.

Tina
