I have received a letter from the ATO suggesting that I owe a small sum of money for unpaid tax in 2006, I have queried this and have now been advised that I am obliged to pay the sum outstanding. It now transpires that both my wife and I are required to complete tax returns going back to 2007. However in September 2007 I was advised by a firm of tax advisors in Geelong that the UK taxation rules had changed and that we were to be taxed in the UK, we therefore were not required to complete tax returns in Australia as we had no choice where we paid our taxes.
Both my wife and I are temporary residents on a 410 retirement visa, neither of us are employed nor do we receive any income from any Australian investments.
Can anyone offer any advice on this situation and was I given the correct advice regarding the UK tax office. Thanks Mick Brown
If you have no Aus source income you should probably lodge the one page ATO tax form that affirms the position insofar as Australian tax is concerned.
You should also ensure that your UK tax position is in order, and that a suitable PAYE Coding is being applied (and has been since 01/07/2006) to your UK pensions.
Best regards.

Thank you again Alan, I went straight to the form and printed it. For your info (and any one else) it is a ... Non-lodgment advice ... Once again thanks for your help. Regards Mick Brown
