Hi all,

Ive read elsewhere on forums that this may be the case, e.g.

"As a general rule a SMSF is worth considering once the fund value exceeds about $200k in value because of the annual compliance costs."
http://gomatildaforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5726004143/m/3851002702

However, I've just read a document on the ASX site:

http://www.asx.com.au/resources/pdf/ASX_SMSF_Market_Res...Summary_03_Final.pdf

where it seems views are expressed that between $20 and $100K might be enough.

Both these pieces are not up to date - 2006 and 2003 respectively.

Be good to get any up to date thoughts on the matter.

Many thanks.

As a starter read this article and look at the rest of the web site.

This is just one of many companies offering cheap entry into the SMSF market. Browse around the net to build up a knowledge.

You need to understand that a SMSF is a Trust and that you will be a trustee of the trust along with the other members of the SMSF. This makes you responsible for all decisions within the SMSF. One if the most important things to understand is that the money within the trust is yours - but not yet. The trust is a separate legal entity that you control and where most people go badly wrong is co-mingling the trust funds with their own.

Go to the ATO web site area on superfunds and they have a section on SMSFs which is essential reading as the ATO controls all SMSFs.
