Hi just signed up on here as my company have kindly asked if i would consider taking a position with our australian division and relocating there.
I understand the basics of the visa system and have passed the initial assesments for a skilled worker visa, without the fact that i effectivly already have employment for australia but am struggling to understand what would be the best options for the tax situation.

As i have worked overseas with no local taxation for the last 6 months i was intending to register as ex-pat this year for a full uk tax refund, but if i then relocate to oz i think i would be liable for full rate oz tax as apose to being covered by the 10% double tax releif i would get as a uk tax payer?

Second to that what are the implications of being employed & payed directly in oz against being employed & payed in the uk but released on a long term contract to work in oz, obviously meaning my income would have to be transfred from the uk to an oz bank account?

Guess this may be a bit much to be asking on here but also any advise on agencys or companys which could help would be great, im not hot on tax an finaces an so would really prefer to just pay a fee and get professional help but im finding the web is so full of sites im not sure who to use.

Hi Mike

The only person I would even consider going to for advice in the situation you describe is Alan Collett of Go Matilda, so you have come to the right place!

I say this because Alan is a Chartered Accountant in the UK and he is also whatever the Australian equivalent of this is, in addition to being a Registered Migration Agent of many years' standing who is very highly respected by his own peers in the Migration Agency field. His accountancy qualifications speak for themselves, so he is DEFINITELY the right man to help you with all your queries.

Don't expect it to be free, because it sounds quite complex to me, plus you may have more than one option here. But I think you would find it money well-spent.

Good luck

Gill

Hi Colin
Har har. Alan is a bean-counter, chum! They don't hand over the shekel that easily!

Seriously, though, Alan is more clued up about the tax & money side of the migration-game than anyone else I've ever come across, and I've never seen a post by him on the visa-side that I've felt wasn't 100% spot-on.

I'm dead hard to please, so the guy must be seriously good. It is only fair to heap praise where it is due, I believe.

Cheers

Gill Wink
